  • Five boring ways to protect your body from burnout

In my previous post, here, I introduced polyvagal theory and the role that our autonomic nervous system plays in stress and burnout. Burnout and stress have profound physical, emotional, and mental effects because our nervous system is constantly sending information up to the brain to affect the signals being sent to the rest of the…

  • Breathe and relax

Our breath is one of the most powerful tools we have to manage our stress response and calm our nervous system. In times of high stress we are less likely to prioritise the activities that really help us maintain our wellbeing, such as being outside and eating healthily, so I wanted to film a short…

  • This is your brain on burnout

In my last two posts I introduced burnout as a collection of common symptoms rooted in nervous system exhaustion, a result of enduring high stress levels for too long. The conditions of chronic unrelieved stress and mild to moderate burnout are endemic in academia because of fundamental systemic problems. But there is also a lack…

  • Stress, chronic stress, or burnout?

In my first post I introduced burnout as a collection of symptoms related to sustained nervous system arousal, and highlighted reasons why burnout may be particularly common in academia. In this post, I am going to introduce the stress-burnout spectrum, with some indicators for positioning yourself on that scale, and suggest appropriate interventions for each…

  • Am I tired, or is it burnout?

By far the most common topic I have been asked about has been burnout: what is it? how do we mitigate against it? how can we recover? So over the next few posts I am going to do a series on burnout, including a deeper dive into what is happening in our bodies when we…

  • No one cares, work harder. Or, why I started a specialist coaching practice for academics

We all know what the problems are. Overwork, presenteeism, constant emails and reactivity, lack of resourcing for complex pastoral needs, inadequate mentoring, non-transparent hiring, ever-changing research priorities, lack of opportunities, discrimination and internal bias, precarity, failure to confront the legacies of Covid… Higher education is a mess. Despite being one of the most potentially rewarding…

  • Coaching, counselling, or mentoring? Choosing the option that is right for you.

Part Two – coach, therapist, or mentor? In part one of this blog I explained what coaching is, and is not, and offered some tips for choosing a coach to work with. In this post I am going to compare coaching to the other two prominent helping models that are often offered when workplace anxiety…

  • Coaching, counselling, or mentoring? Choosing the option that is right for you.

When you are experiencing challenges in your working life, especially if those challenges involve or are impacting on your mental health, it can be tricky to know where to access support. In academia, mentoring programmes or referral to occupational health or counselling are fairly common; coaching remains less so, though perhaps with the caveat that…

A nervous system primed for constant activity and reactivity has a hard time slowing down. And yes, all those somatic tools and practices are great, I teach them to my clients all the time. But if you are approaching burnout you don’t need more things to think about or to feel anxious about forgetting. If you can’t take a day off without overwhelming mental noise and physical agitation, you’re not alone. When we live in survival mode for long periods of time it becomes habitual for our nervous system, and walking away from the undone to-do list feels deeply unsafe. You might even know at a deeper level that a rest will help you to work more productively when you go back, but your mind and body just can’t relax. I don’t believe that women need to sacrifice their wellbeing for a demanding job, nor do I believe that having a balanced lifestyle should be antithetical to doing work that you love. I coach women with creative and career ambitions who want to end the struggle with burnout. A little explanation for yesterday’s reel. I coach highly productive women who want to create and to advance in their careers but keep landing in cycles of burnout.
