Launching Mind-Body-Movement on Beathacoaching.org Dear friends, it’s the end of January, and Storm Éowyn is currently blowing across Scotland as a little reminder that winter isn’t over quite yet. Nonetheless, there are snowdrops starting to flower in sheltered corners of the garden, and the evenings are noticeably lighter. We have passed the darkest months, and…

Hogmanay 2024 Dear friends How has your Christmas been? And your betweenmas? I recently wrote about this season on Substack, and the feeling that the days at the end of the year always give me – potential, possibility, reconnection. I tend to struggle to slow down, but the enforced break of Christmas, when everything gets…

Slow Writing Club launches, and new members calendar for Jan-Mar 2025 Dear friends… And here we are, just a few weeks away from the end of the year and a real rest. Over on Substack recently I have been thinking about the effect that seasons, weather, and time have on my writing and on my…

All the freebies! Dear friends, As the weather gets colder and darker I think we all have to fight the urge to turn in on ourselves. It feels like that atavistic urge to hibernate and stay safe through the long dark months could so easily take over. But I know from experience that less daylight…

  • My October Anniversary

Dear friends, At time of writing I am settling into the first few days of my third year in private practice, my third year of self-employment, my third year beyond academia. This time of year is filled for many of us with bittersweet connections, I think. Something about the cooling of the air and the…

Dear friends Yes, I know it isn’t quite September yet, but the Scottish weather is not leaving us in any doubt that autumn is on the way. I also wanted to send this newsletter out just a little early to give you time to book into Burnout Rewire before it starts next week. You can…

Dear friends Booking now open for Burnout Rewire… When I started Beatha Coaching in 2022 I launched on a single focus: burnout. I had seen so much (and experienced so much) in academia – truly amazing women (and men) with fantastic brains, top notch qualifications and experience, full of passion and empathy, getting crushed by…

News from Beatha Coaching Dear friends Welcome to updates from Beatha Coaching, my new look newsletter. For a while now I have been wondering what to do with the blog space on Beathacoaching.org. When I started my practice in 2022 I was writing here regularly, but since November my primary writing space has shifted to…

  • And then, life happens…

When I was in academia, March was the hardest month. Judging from the conversations I have been having with clients recently, that is still true. There is something about the uphill slog to Easter, through the bulk of the Spring teaching, with increasingly stressed dissertation students, committees starting to plan for the next year (and…

  • How to be a psychologically safe supervisor

Over the past year I have been very fortunate to work with an outstanding team at the University of Stirling, who brought me in to help develop a mental health aware coaching programme for their research postgraduates. As part of this programme I have the opportunity to offer some training to PhD supervisors about mental…

Supporting academics to research with care

If you know exactly what I mean then chances are you grew up in an environment where being busy was important. Perhaps you also went into the kind of high-demand career that reinforced the need for productivity. Join me for a self-paced summer writing programme to support you through the season. You receive ten weeks of writing prompts, accompanied by a weekly co-writing call, and supported through three group coaching sessions for the cohort. The live calls are all recorded and sent to you if you can’t attend. Safety = capacity. Open to book now - Somatic Yoga six week block at the Wee Yoga Room starts Tuesday 7th July. One of the things I hear most often from my clients is that they appreciate not having to explain how academia works or why they feel trapped in a cycle of burnouts. I’ve had a lot of really interesting jobs, but they were jobs I thought I ‘should’ want. I always ended up frustrated, trying to provoke change or acting as a mentor to younger women.
